European Union leaders have condemned the US President’s plan to link trade tariffs to his desire to acquire Greenland. Warning of a “dangerous downward spiral,” the EU has called for an emergency meeting of envoys to take place on Sunday.
The leadership in Brussels, represented by Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, was clear in its opposition. They stated that tariffs would undermine the strong relationship between the EU and the US. Promising that Europe would remain united and coordinated, they emphasized their commitment to upholding the sovereignty of member states.
The threat involves a tiered escalation of duties. Trump stated that from February 1, countries such as Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and the UK would face a 10% tariff on all goods. He warned that this rate would jump to 25% on June 1 if a deal for Greenland is not reached, placing immense pressure on European exporters.
In response to US criticism of military activities, the EU defended the actions of the Danish Kingdom. Leaders explained that recent exercises in the Arctic were pre-coordinated with allies to strengthen regional security. They reiterated that these activities are standard procedure and pose no threat to the United States.
Solidarity with Denmark is the cornerstone of the EU’s strategy. Leaders noted that while talks between the US and Denmark are ongoing, the bloc will not be divided. The emergency meeting at 4:00 GMT on Sunday is designed to ensure that all 27 member states speak with one voice against the weaponization of trade.
