The deep squat hold is one such movement. To perform it, stand with feet about hip-width apart and lower into a squat, ensuring your heels remain on the floor. Aim to hold this position for up to 60 seconds without support. This exercise tests ankle, knee, and hip mobility, along with lower-body strength and control. If maintaining the position proves difficult or if your heels lift off the ground, it may indicate a need to improve mobility or lower-body control.
Another movement, the dead hang, involves gripping a secure pull-up bar and holding your body off the ground with extended arms for 30 seconds. This exercise assesses grip strength and upper-body endurance while also requiring shoulder stability and control. Beginners should ensure the bar is properly secured and avoid the exercise if they have injuries that could be exacerbated by hanging.
Getting up from the floor without using hands, knees, or forearms for support is another simple test. It demands a blend of lower-body strength, balance, coordination, and mobility. While a challenge for some, performance can vary based on age, flexibility, past injuries, and fitness level, so it shouldn’t be seen as a definitive health measure.
The forward fold movement involves standing with feet hip-width apart and bending forward with straight legs to see how far your hands can comfortably reach. This exercise primarily tests hamstring and back flexibility. Limited reach doesn’t necessarily imply poor health, as flexibility can be enhanced over time with appropriate exercises. Lastly, the single-leg balance test involves standing on one leg, with the difficulty increasing by closing the eyes. It evaluates balance, proprioception, and ankle stability. Performing this in a safe area is crucial, especially when closing the eyes.
