Amid growing economic ties, China and Germany are enhancing their collaboration in business and technology, with a notable shift toward mutual exchange of expertise and innovation. This development marks a departure from the past, where technological advancements predominantly flowed from Germany to China. A recent joint research report highlighted these changes, which was presented in Beijing during the China-Germany (China-Europe) Hidden Champions Forum 2026. The event, held in Beijing’s Shunyi district, drew over 400 executives and business representatives from both Europe and China, signaling a robust interest in fostering deeper international business connections.
The research indicates a significant trend among European companies aiming to expand their operations within China. About 38 percent of surveyed European firms expressed intentions to boost their research and development investments in China. Furthermore, 40 percent of these companies plan to grant their Chinese subsidiaries more autonomy, allowing them to operate with greater independence from their headquarters in Germany. These findings underscore a shift in strategy as European businesses seek to integrate more closely with the Chinese market.
Concurrently, major Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers such as Li Auto and NIO are establishing research and design centers in Germany. This move highlights an emerging pattern of reciprocal technological cooperation between the two nations, as Chinese firms look to tap into Germany’s innovative environment and expertise. The establishment of these centers reflects the increasing desire for two-way technological exchanges and collaborations.
The forum also witnessed the introduction of new initiatives aimed at facilitating business operations and collaborations. A public service station was launched to assist companies in overcoming technical trade barriers, providing a vital resource for businesses navigating the complexities of international trade. Additionally, a new partnership initiative was announced, encouraging German and European companies to engage actively with Beijing’s economic and technological cooperation zone in Shunyi, further strengthening economic ties.
Tang Wenhong, a representative of Beijing’s economic strategy, emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting Sino-German business cooperation. The plan includes attracting more innovative enterprises to bolster Beijing’s status as a global hub for science and technology. This vision aligns with the broader goal of fostering an environment conducive to international collaboration and innovation, positioning Beijing as a pivotal player in the global technological landscape.
