In a recent gathering of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, representatives from Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP party expressed their concerns over the European Commission’s lack of response to recent political and constitutional changes in Hungary. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László highlighted these developments, which they argue pose a threat to democratic institutions within the country.
During the session, the Hungarian lawmakers urged the Commission to clarify its stance on several contentious issues. These include amendments to the constitution, limitations on political competition, modifications affecting parliamentary mandates, and matters concerning the independence of state institutions. The delegation emphasized that while the Commission has previously voiced concerns regarding the rule of law in Hungary and withheld EU funding as a consequence, it has remained silent on these latest changes.
The FIDESZ–KDNP representatives questioned whether the recent constitutional adjustments align with the democratic standards upheld by the European Union. They stressed the importance of applying democratic principles consistently across all member states, implying that Hungary is not receiving equal treatment in this regard.
Despite the pointed inquiries from the Hungarian MEPs, the Commission’s representatives at the meeting did not offer comprehensive answers to the issues raised. The situation highlights ongoing tensions between the Hungarian government and EU institutions regarding governance and adherence to democratic norms.
