In a significant shift for Android users, Google is set to alter the way backups for Android devices are managed in terms of storage. Up until now, Android device backups, which encompass SMS messages, call history, device settings, and app data, have not impacted the 15GB of complimentary cloud storage that comes with every Google Account. This shared storage is used across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. However, with the forthcoming update, these backups will now count towards the total storage limit.
The change is anticipated to roll out in the coming weeks, and Google has indicated that the average Android backup will consume about 40MB of storage. This shift may lead users who are nearing or have exceeded their storage limits to either clear up space or consider upgrading to a Google One subscription for additional storage. Should an account exhaust its available storage, automatic device backups will be paused until more space is made available.
In conjunction with this storage policy update, Google is working on introducing more comprehensive backup controls. These controls will enable users to decide which apps and types of data they want to back up.
