In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Hungary secured three medals in Greco-Roman wrestling at the U20 World Wrestling Championships held in Bratislava. Among the standout performers, László Koppány captured the silver medal, with Zalán Toplak and Petro Zsitovoz both earning bronze medals in their respective weight categories.
László Koppány, competing in the 130kg division, showcased his prowess by advancing to the final round. He achieved notable victories over competitors from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, in the final bout, Koppány faced Russia’s reigning world and European champion Ali Ilyasov, where he was ultimately defeated 8–0, resulting in a commendable silver medal finish.
In the 77kg category, Zalán Toplak, a wrestler from Ferencváros, claimed the bronze medal. His journey to the podium included a strong performance in the repechage round, where he secured a decisive 10–2 victory against Giorgi Gogelashvili of Georgia. This achievement marked Toplak’s first-ever World Championship medal, highlighting a significant milestone in his wrestling career.
Adding to Hungary’s success, Petro Zsitovoz earned a bronze medal in the 67kg category. Despite facing an initial setback during his placement match against Egypt’s U23 world champion Mohamed Abdelrehim, Zsitovoz made a remarkable comeback to win 11–3, thereby securing his spot on the podium.
The championships commenced with the Greco-Roman wrestling events, featuring eight Hungarian athletes as part of the nation’s 22-member delegation. Their collective efforts and achievements underscore Hungary’s strong presence in the international wrestling arena, as they continue to showcase their talents on the world stage.
