Hungary Awaits Release of EU Funds Amidst Economic Uncertainty

by admin477351

Amidst ongoing discussions about European Union funds, the European Commission has dismissed assertions that Hungary has already acquired or been guaranteed billions of euros in previously frozen EU resources. Contrary to these claims, Hungary has yet to submit its formal request for payment under the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The deadline for Hungary to complete and submit the necessary paperwork is set for September 30, 2026.

The European Commission has clarified that it will only evaluate Hungary’s adherence to the stipulated reforms and “super milestones” upon receipt of this payment request. Up to this point, the review process remains incomplete, and there is no confirmation that Hungary has met all the required conditions. The RRF process demands that Hungary first demonstrate the implementation of the required reforms and investments before the European Commission can scrutinize the submission and authorize any fund disbursement.

According to the Commission, any payments that are approved following this review will be disbursed by December 31, 2026. However, the process may face delays if the Commission identifies issues within Hungary’s submission, potentially requiring additional documentation or corrections. This situation has emerged following assertions by the TISZA government that Hungary had effectively secured the EU funds that were previously frozen.

The European Commission’s statements underscore that no funds have been transferred yet, and the final assessment of Hungary’s compliance is still pending. This ongoing review highlights the critical nature of fulfilling the EU’s stringent criteria before any financial assistance is released, marking a key step in Hungary’s access to the Recovery and Resilience Facility funds.
