Greece has bolstered its diplomatic presence at the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on key issues such as regional security, maritime safety, and international cooperation. Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis has engaged in high-level discussions, emphasizing the significance of Greece’s trilateral conversations with Cyprus, Jordan, and Egypt. Additionally, bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from India, Brazil, and Eritrea have underscored Greece’s commitment to strengthening regional partnerships amid ongoing conflicts and instability in the Middle East.

A notable event at the assembly was the co-hosting of a high-level discussion on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies with India. The focus was on their potential applications in shipping, maritime security, and the freedom of navigation, highlighting the importance of these technologies in global maritime operations. Gerapetritis also took part in the inaugural meeting of the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers, reflecting Greece’s status as a major global shipping nation and its interest in protecting maritime routes and ensuring the uninterrupted movement of goods.

Greece is also preparing to assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in October. This marks the second presidency during its current two-year term. According to Gerapetritis, this presidency comes at a pivotal time, with ongoing armed conflicts and international crises expected to remain at the forefront of the Council’s agenda. The timing also coincides with the selection process for the next UN Secretary-General, adding further significance to Greece’s leadership role.

Beyond these engagements, Greece’s broader agenda at the General Assembly includes discussions on the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, developments in Sub-Saharan Africa, UN reform, and the strengthening of multilateral cooperation. These discussions reflect Greece’s strategic interests in enhancing diplomatic ties and addressing pressing international issues.
