by admin477351

Greece has taken on the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council as of October 1, 2023. This marks Greece’s second and final term as president during its 2025–26 tenure as an elected member of the council. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will oversee the 15-member body throughout the month.

The Security Council will address pressing global issues, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine, the volatile situation in Gaza, and tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the council will focus on the conflict in Sudan and the security crisis in Haiti, where an international security force is actively working to curb armed violence in preparation for upcoming elections.

Greece’s presidency also coincides with discussions regarding the selection of the next UN secretary-general. The Security Council plays a pivotal role in recommending a candidate to the General Assembly, with the new secretary-general set to take office on January 1, 2027.

The agenda for Greece’s presidency is extensive, with an emphasis on finding resolutions and fostering dialogue in regions beset by conflict. As the international community watches closely, the Security Council’s actions and decisions during this period will be crucial in shaping global diplomatic dynamics.
