Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Hungarian President András Baka highlighted a pressing “crisis of trust” within the UN, emphasizing the need for the organization to uphold international law uniformly among all nations. Baka urged that no country should be considered above the law, advocating for the UN to maintain its ability to act decisively, treat its member states equitably, and consistently enforce shared principles.

Baka’s speech strongly condemned Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, characterizing them as a breach of the UN Charter. He reiterated Hungary’s stance on supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, insisting that any diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict must prioritize these principles. Baka called for a diplomatic resolution but stressed that a lasting peace settlement must respect Ukraine’s recognized borders.

In addition to discussing the situation in Ukraine, President Baka addressed the humanitarian challenges in the Middle East. He emphasized the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law and called for the safe and continuous delivery of humanitarian aid to affected areas. His remarks underscored the necessity of respecting human rights and ensuring aid reaches those in need without interruption.

Turning to the issue of migration, Baka outlined Hungary’s approach to managing irregular migration. He stated that while Hungary is committed to combating irregular migration, it remains equally dedicated to respecting human dignity and upholding protections for refugees. This balanced approach aims to address security concerns while honoring international commitments to human rights.
