In a bid to enhance transparency and protect genuine musicians, Spotify is set to introduce measures aimed at identifying and reducing the visibility of AI-generated artists on its platform. Starting September, profiles and track listings of AI-created artist identities will feature an “AI persona” label. This initiative is designed to help users easily differentiate between authentic performers and AI-generated identities.
The streaming giant’s strategy involves excluding AI personas from personalized recommendations by default. This step is taken to ensure that real musicians do not lose exposure due to the increasing presence of AI-generated content. While Spotify will provide an option for artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated, it will also employ human reviewers and AI-driven tools to detect those who do not disclose this information.
The decision comes against a backdrop of rapidly growing AI-generated music, with Spotify having previously revealed the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a year. This statistic underscores the magnitude of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music platforms, highlighting the need for measures to tackle this issue.
Spotify emphasizes the importance of transparency as generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry. With listeners increasingly interested in whether a track is created by a human artist or an AI, the platform aims to meet this demand by ensuring clarity and authenticity in its offerings.
