The state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening bond between the two nations, a relationship that has evolved through decades of collaboration across various sectors. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972, the UAE and Germany have broadened their cooperation significantly, focusing on political, economic, cultural, and energy-related partnerships.
Trade and investment have been central to the UAE-German relationship, with bilateral trade reaching over Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion) last year. This positions the UAE as Germany’s foremost trading partner in the Gulf region. The economic connection is further solidified by the presence of about 2,000 German companies operating within the UAE, including prominent names like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. The energy sector has also seen increased collaboration, with joint efforts on initiatives like renewable energy, climate action, decarbonisation, and energy security.
In a significant step towards enhancing energy security and industrial cooperation, the two countries inked an agreement in 2022 that includes provisions for UAE liquefied natural gas supplies to Germany and the development of joint projects centered on clean energy and climate initiatives. This agreement reflects the ongoing commitment to addressing global energy challenges while fostering industrial growth.
Beyond trade and energy, the partnership extends into research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. The formal elevation of political ties came in 2004 with the signing of a strategic partnership agreement, which encompasses regional security, economic cooperation, and research. This comprehensive partnership highlights the multifaceted nature of UAE-German relations and their shared commitment to addressing both regional and global issues.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the enduring relationship between the UAE and Germany remains robust. Both nations continue to explore and expand cooperation across various strategic sectors, demonstrating the resilience and depth of their partnership.
