Amidst a backdrop of global economic uncertainty, China is reaching out to strengthen its ties with Germany, advocating for enhanced cooperation. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of this partnership during a phone call with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, on Monday. The ministers underscored the benefits of bolstering economic and strategic collaboration between the two nations, highlighting the need for communication, mutual trust, and practical cooperation.
Wang Yi underscored the significance of multilateralism and free trade, advocating for dialogue as a means to address economic challenges. He also urged Germany to maintain its support for the one-China policy, particularly in relation to stability across the Taiwan Strait. Furthermore, Wang expressed the view that any economic and trade differences between China and the European Union should be resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation.
In response, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul acknowledged the positive momentum in Germany-China relations and reiterated Germany’s commitment to the one-China policy. He expressed support for increased high-level exchanges and collaboration in trade and economic matters, aligning with China’s call for deeper cooperation.
The conversation between the two diplomats also touched on pressing international issues, including the situations in Iran and Ukraine. Wang Yi stressed China’s dedication to supporting peace efforts and enhancing communication with both Germany and the broader European Union.
